Introduction to Short Story Writing

This course will focus on the essential elements of short fiction, allowing students to create stories ready for submission to the nation's top literary journals and magazines. Utilizing a mixture of lecture, exercises, and workshops, the class will focus each week on a core element of literary fiction: opening hooks, plot, characterization, voice and style, descriptions, and editing. Additionally, the class will offer insight into the publishing industry with information on how to properly format and submit stories for publication. The instructor will offer in-depth critique in the form of margin notes and an editorial letter on one story for each student by the end of the class.
