Lead Abatement Inspector

The objective of this twenty-four (24) hour course is to certify individuals as inspectors and enable them to perform lead-based paint inspections and clearance examinations for abatement or renovation projects. It will train inspectors to identify the presence of lead in housing in order to protect children, and focuses specifically on the presence of lead in paint (paint inspections) and in dust and soil (clearance inspections). It includes the HUD inspection protocol; radiation, X-Ray fluorescence theory and workshop; regulations; visual inspection, clearance sampling, and testing; data analysis and report preparation; and a field trip to inspect a building for lead-based paint using the HUD Guidelines. The course is based in large part on two documents: Guidelines for the Evaluation and Control of Lead-based Paint Hazards in Housing, (HUD) and Lead; Requirements for Lead-based Paint Activities in Target Housing and Child Occupied Facilities: Final Rule (40 CFR Part 745, EPA.
